Approximately 400,000 Arkansans eat on $4.09 per day. That is the average amount an individual in Arkansas receives from the Supplemental Nutrional Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamp program. Appriximately 50% of those are elderly and children under the age of 18. No small task. 20% of all children in Pulaski County qualify for free or reduced lunch programs. The rate is much higher in some schools than others. Hunger and poverty are major issues in our community. Last Wednesday, our 7-12th graders, visited the Arkansas Food Bank where they learned how Little Rock Church partners with the Arkansas Food Bank to feed families. Ron talked about the importance of LRC’s Food for the Hungry Ministry. He spoke about the upcoming food drive and our critical need for food to assist those who [...]

The past 17 hours have been filled with nervousness, anticipation, disappointment, surprise, frustration, anger, joy, satisfaction, and love. As I go to bed it’s hard to describe for you what  today has been like. You had to be there. I was changed today. I was changed by 13 teens who worked alongside 22 others. I was changed by their work ethic, joy, enthusiasm and Christ-like spirit. I was changed by our adult’s leadership, attitudes and compassion toward others around them.  I was touched by Carl’s joy as he said that he had never felt so welcomed by a church before. I pray he will walk through our doors one day soon. I plan to visit him next week. I heard stories from residents tonight as nearly 200 people gathered for food, music and getting to know [...]

I’ve attended a church all my life. I think I was in a church just days after being born and have definitely attended a Bible class and worship assembly more Sundays than I’ve missed. I participated in more Bible Bowls than I can count. Memorized John 3:16 before I was 4 years old. I remember an old preacher, D.L. Hargas, who would call all of us small children to the front of our small church. He would share a short story and then we’d sing, “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus.” I knew just about every major Bible story by the time I was in 6th grade. I re-enacted, drew, read the story of David and Goliath hundreds of times. We kept this life-size poster of Goliath in one of our children’s classrooms. By the time I was in 5th [...]

If you join us for iServe this Saturday, October 22, you are likely to meet Mr. Templeton, a retired attorney who lives in the Geyer Spring neighborhood. A lifelong resident of this neighborhood, he’s active in his church serving in the food pantry. He also spends much of his time in Benny Craig Park enjoying daily walks. He organizes a small group of volunteers, mostly elderly, to walk and pick up litter in the park. That small group also maintains two small flower beds at the park’s entrance. This Saturday, we have the opportunity to encourage Mr. Templeton and others who live in, and care for, this neighborhood and park. It’s a terrific way to show others we care! Join us this Saturday. It’s not too late to sign up. Contact Chad Nall (chad@littlerockchurch.org) to [...]

Sunday morning, I shared reason #1 for iServe. Today, I want to share with you reason #2. This morning I spoke with Ms. Coley, an elderly resident in Cloverdale. She no longer works so she can care for her husband. Her son does the best he can to look after her, but he’s is in the military in Texas. An active member of her neighborhood association, she looks out for others, but there are certain things she needs done on her property that she can’t do. It’s not much — hauling limbs her son cut down, mowing a section of her property, pruning some shrubs in her yard. But it’s more than she can do. She contacted me this morning to thank us for what we are going to do. She’s a delightful woman to talk [...]
